It’s an ineffable feeling to slip into a cosy knitted sweater from our grandmother, mother or aunt (we love that feeling too!) But, wait, have you ever given this a thought: what’s the difference between thread & yarn? We have, and here we are explaining the subtle yet validating difference between the two.
Let’s begin with the basics
Yarn and thread, both are constituents of textile, yarn is more of a raw material used to create a fabric while the thread is used to sew the fabrics together to create a garment. The yarn was used in knitting the cosy sweater we were talking about, remember? But it is also used in sewing, weaving, crocheting and embroidering. While a thread is used for sewing, darning and embroidering.
Let’s look at them individually,
Thread
It is a long thin strand of fibre used in sewing different materials, it could be cotton, nylon, rayon, silk, polyester and more. Thread is essentially a type of yarn. Twist per inch (twists tell you how tightly something is plied, twists dictate thread’s strength) in a thread is usually higher, most of the threads are twisted for one individual strand of the yarn.
Yarn
Yarn is a length of interlocked fibres used to knit, as well as produce fabrics, so technically, the yarn has two categories: the thread that is used in our sewing machines and the yarn we all know, the fluffy ball of wool. Yarns are made from different kinds of fibres both natural and synthetic, the most common type of plant fibre is cotton. Animal fibres are also used, not limited to wool yarn (from the sheep), silk (from insect larvae), cashmere (from goats), alpaca (from alpaca, of course!) and so on.
There are two types of yarns, spun/staple yarn and filament yarn. Spun yarn is made from staple fibres that come in short discrete lengths (all natural fibres except silk are staple fibres) by twisting them in an S or Z twist and the process of twisting fibres into yarn is called spinning. On the other hand, filament yarn is made by twisting filaments together (one or more filaments – monofilament & multifilament respectively).
